The Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities : Unfinished Second Edition
نویسنده
چکیده
John Van Vleck published his classic monograph “The Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities” in 1932 while on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin. In his later years, he worked on a second edition which unfortunately was never completed. After his death his wife Abigail gave his notes for the second edition to Chun Lin. These notes contain additions and other, mostly minor, changes to Chapters I, II, III, IV, and VI of the first edition. There are no notes for Chapters VII XIII. Chapter V, “Susceptibilities in the Old Quantum Theory, Contrasted with the New” in the original edition was to have been omitted. In its place was an entirely new chapter entitled “The Local Field and the Dielectric Constants of Condensed Media” that was inserted after Chapter III. The old Chapter IV, “The Classical Theory of Magnetic Susceptibilities” would become Chapter V in the new edition.

Quasi-Static Theory for Uniaxial Chiral Omega Media
The problem of unbounded uniaxial chiral omega media in the presence of both static electric and magnetic point charges is investigated. For this purpose scalar electric and magnetic potentials in these media are introduced. Using these potentials, the corresponding electric and magnetic fields are determined. The similar problem of static electric and magnetic current sources with the goal of ...

In this research, analysis of nonlocal magneto-electro-thermo-elastic of a functionally graded nanobeamdue to magneto-electro-elastic loads has been done. In order to formulate the problem the Timoshenko theory of beams is utilized. The principle of virtual work, Hamilton’s principle as well as nonlocal magneto-electro-thermo-elastic relations has been recruited to derive the governing eq...
متن کاملNonlocal Piezomagnetoelasticity Theory for Buckling Analysis of Piezoelectric/Magnetostrictive Nanobeams Including Surface Effects
This paper presents the surface piezomagnetoelasticity theory for size-dependent buckling analysis of an embedded piezoelectric/magnetostrictive nanobeam (PMNB). It is assumed that the subjected forces from the surrounding medium contain both normal and shear components. Therefore, the surrounded elastic foundation is modeled by Pasternak foundation. The nonlocal piezomagnetoelasticity theory i...
متن کاملVibration Analysis of Magneto-Electro-Elastic Timoshenko Micro Beam Using Surface Stress Effect and Modified Strain Gradient Theory under Moving Nano-Particle
In this article, the free vibration analysis of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) Timoshenko micro beam model based on surface stress effect and modified strain gradient theory (MSGT) under moving nano-particle is presented. The governing equations of motion using Hamilton’s principle are derived and these equations are solved using differential quadrature method (DQM). The effects of dimensionless...
متن کاملMagneto-Electro-Thermo-Mechanical Response of a Multiferroic Doubly-Curved Nano-Shell
Free vibration of a simply-supported magneto-electro-elastic doubly-curved nano-shell is studied based on the first-order shear deformation theory in the presence of the rotary inertia effect. To model the electric and magnetic behaviors of the nano-shell, Gauss’s laws for electrostatics and magneto statics are used. By using Navier’s method, the partial differential equations of motion are red...
